Meet Stats + Data Science at PSU

Join us on June 11!

Whether you're looking to pivot careers or gain a competitive edge, Portland State's MS in Statistics + Data Science combines mathematical rigor with hands-on experience to prepare you for high-demand careers in today's data-driven world.

Choosing a graduate program is a big decision. Join us at our Open House to meet the faculty, students and community behind our revamped master's program.

Applications for our next cohort are due September 1, but you can receive an application fee waiver when you apply by July 1.

Apply by July 1 with no application fee

Launch your career in data science!

Choose your focus

Optional tracks let you tailor your degree to your interests and career goals, including:

  • AI and machine learning
  • Biostatistics and health
  • Environmental and geospatial
  • Advanced statistics

Work with real clients

Gain hands-on experience through our consulting lab, where students collaborate with researchers and scientists across the region on real-world data challenges. You'll understand their goals, analyze complex datasets, and develop solutions. The data is often messy and incomplete — just like the kinds of challenges professionals face in the field.

Pursue a research project

If research is in your future, you can choose to conduct an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. You'll engage with current literature, develop a research paper, and present your findings in a colloquium.

Career-focused classes

The classes are clearly designed with the professional in mind while not sacrificing what I consider to be the necessary backbone to a good data scientist: a strong core of mathematical fundamentals.

FAQs

What are the prerequisites?
A bachelor’s degree in mathematics or data science is not required, but applicants should have a strong quantitative background. We expect completion of the following undergraduate courses with a grade of B or better: advanced statistical methods, introductory analysis or advanced calculus, and linear algebra.

What are the core requirements?

Our core curriculum is made up of three components: a 12-credit statistics core, a 15-credit data science core, and a 6-credit training and validation core, where you apply what you’ve learned through a consulting rotation or an independent research project.

Do I have to complete a research project?

No. You can complete the 6-credit training and validation requirement through the consulting rotation, a research project, or a combination of both (3 credits each).

How long will it take me to complete this program?
This is a 45-credit master's program and the vast majority of our students complete the program within two years, though often students complete the program in a bit less time.

Is it possible to attend part time?
Yes! Some courses are offered in the evening, and additional evening options may be added based on student demand.

Is funding available?

The program does not currently offer dedicated graduate teaching assistantships. However, as our CADES consulting lab continues to grow, we hope to provide paid opportunities for students in the second year of the program.

Is this program eligible for STEM Optional Practical Training?

Yes, our MS in Statistics + Data Science is a STEM-designated degree program, which provides additional opportunities for international students pursuing employment in the U.S. after graduation.
